For any group — be it social or charitable or fraternal — consistency is a key component. With a less formal group — like a monthly poker night — this isn’t as crucial, but still important to ensure its lasting success. (Unless of course your poker night is just a one-time special occasion!) If you’ve set a date, don’t change it. I am a member of an AA group that meets at a clubhouse and have a few questions. We are the only group that meets at the clubhouse, except for a monthly district meeting, approximately 12 groups. The clubhouse is not owned by the group, the group rents the space from the clubhouse. The group would like to hold a bingo night, poker night and a pool tournament ($10 entry fee) and allow the proceeds to go directly to the group. The group would like to announce this during the meeting, generally when we ask if there are any AA related announcements or when we are announcing AA related activities. One of the arguments is that this is necessary to get more people involved in the group (fellowship) and of course, it will help pay the bills. 1.) Does this break any of the traditions as far as announcing (gambling activities) during an AA meeting? In the past we have announced any of these topics prior to the start of the meeting and have not included them as an AA related announcement. Also, the events were held by the clubhouse, not the group and proceeds went to the clubhouse. We would also keep any fliers of such activities posted outside the meeting room and not read the information during a meeting. 2.) Any negative impacts this may have on an individual group or AA as a whole would be much appreciated. I thank anyone who responds as I would like to have as many opinions as possible so that I may make a decision based on what would truly be best for my group. I do not hold an elected position, but I do have a vote and want to cast that vote appropriately.

P.S. I know tradition 7 states that we are fully self supporting through our own contributions. I guess we would have to ensure that only alcoholics would be participating in these activities. Or we could donate the proceeds to the Clubhouse itself. This is where it gets tricky, for me at least. We rarely, if ever, held these activities in the past, but are becoming more and more frequent. Not that I'm against them, I just want to do what is right.
